A magnitude 7 earthquake shakes the north coast, causing fears but no serious damage
Today, 5 December, an earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale struck the northern coast of California, with epicentre 80 km southwest of Eureka in the Pacific Ocean, at 10.44 local time. The main quake caused the activation of a tsunami warning that affected about 5 million people in California and Oregon. Fortunately, the alert was cancelled in less than 90 minutes, with no reports of major damage.
Aftershocks, including one of magnitude 4.2, were also felt in other areas, including San Francisco, where no significant damage was reported. However, the city’s public transport network suffered delays and cancellations. Local authorities, particularly those in Humboldt and Lake counties, are coordinating relief efforts and monitoring the situation.
