Ukraine and EU reject Putin’s plan, respond with counterproposal
Ahead of Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska, Kiev reiterates its refusal to cede territory. Zelensky: “Not a pause in the killings, but immediate peace.”
Ukraine and Europe draw their “red line” ahead of the August summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska: no cession of territory in exchange for a ceasefire, yes to a truce as a starting point for true and lasting peace. This is what emerges, according to Adnkronos, after the marathon meeting in the United Kingdom with the security advisers of Italy, France, and Germany, US Vice President JD Vance, and the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak.
The Wall Street Journal reveals that the Kiev-EU counterproposal, submitted to Washington, calls for an immediate ceasefire, any territorial exchanges only on a reciprocal basis, and solid security guarantees for Ukraine, such as NATO membership.
Putin’s proposal – Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk in exchange for a ceasefire – was rejected without hesitation. “Ukrainians will not surrender their land to the occupier,” reiterated Volodymyr Zelensky, who thanked Trump for the peace proposals but insisted: “What we need now is not a pause in the killings, but a real and lasting peace.”
Meanwhile, according to NBC sources, the White House is considering inviting Zelensky to Alaska for a meeting, although no final decision has been made at this time.
