Tour sponsored by Tel Aviv with Israeli and American creators: ‘Let’s show the truth’
The government initiative – Israel has hired ten influencers to counter allegations by the United Nations that the Tel Aviv government is responsible for deliberately causing famine in Gaza and using it as a weapon against the Palestinian population. The operation, organised by the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and reported by Haaretz, saw Israeli and American content creators temporarily enter the Strip, invited to document the distribution of aid managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-American body created to circumvent Hamas’ control over supplies.
The influencers involved – Participants included US conservative Xavier DuRousseau, with over a million followers, young Israeli Druze Marwan Jaber, Israeli-resident American Jeremy Abramson, Miami lawyer Brooke Goldstein, director of the Lawfare Project, and Israelis Shiraz Shukrun and David Mayofis. DuRousseau posted photos and videos of himself in military fatigues with the caption “Israel is NOT blocking food from entering Gaza”, while Goldstein argued that “direct delivery of aid to the population breaks Hamas” ability to steal and resell it to fund its operations’.
Israel’s version – According to the government, the tour was intended to ‘refute the lies spread by Hamas in the foreign media’ and counter what it calls the ‘hunger campaign’ aimed at undermining Israel’s international image. The government accuses the United Nations and NGOs of ‘negligence and inefficiency’ in distribution, claiming that thousands of tonnes of aid are available but not being delivered.
International protests – More than 100 NGOs have signed an open letter rejecting the Israeli version, denouncing that most major international organisations have not been able to get even one truckload of life-saving supplies into Gaza since 2 March. The UN has called the ongoing famine in Gaza City ‘unacceptable,’ emphasising its human origin. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 271 people have died of starvation and malnutrition since the start of the conflict, including 112 children.
The political context – Haaretz revealed that the Israeli Foreign Ministry has funded the arrival of American influencers with tens of thousands of dollars through the pro-settler organisation Israel365, chosen without public tender for its ability to communicate in line with Trump’s “Maga” and “America First” agenda. The operation also seems aimed at reassuring younger Republican voters, who are traditionally less favourable to Israel: according to the Pew Research Centre, only 48% of Republicans under the age of 50 currently have a positive opinion of the Jewish state.
