US blocks UN resolution for immediate Gaza ceasefire
Fourteen votes in favour in the Security Council with only Washington voting against, blocking the text proposed by ten countries. It is the fifth American veto on Gaza
The UN Security Council has again seen the passage of a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza fail because of a US veto. The text called for ‘an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire’, but despite 14 out of 15 members voting in favour, the resolution was rejected due to Washington’s opposition.
The content of the rejected resolution
The draft had been proposed by Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia. In addition to a ceasefire, the text described the situation in the Gaza Strip as ‘catastrophic’ and called for the ‘immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid’, including the possibility for the UN and its partners to distribute relief supplies ‘in a safe and unimpeded manner’.
This is the fifth US veto against draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire since the beginning of the conflict.
New victims in Israeli raids
Meanwhile, at least ten people were killed in the latest Israeli air raids in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian rescue workers. Civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told Afp that areas where displaced civilians had taken refuge were hit, particularly in the southern city of Khan Yunis, Gaza city and Deir el-Balah.
