Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal shot during an attack in Khan Younis. Meanwhile the first Italian trucks with flour and foodstuffs enter the Strip. The humanitarian situation remains critical.

Two International Committee of the Red Cross workers were killed during an attack on their home in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip. This was announced by the ICRC itself, which in a message posted on Instagram expressed deep condolences for the deaths of Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal, both of whom were engaged in humanitarian work in the area. The attack took place yesterday and, according to the organisation, confirms the dramatic nature of a situation that continues to worsen.

It has once again launched an urgent appeal for a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory, reiterating the need to guarantee security and humanitarian access to the civilian population. The death of the two workers adds to the already high death toll among medical and humanitarian personnel in a war that, more than a year after it began, continues with no prospect of a solution.

Meanwhile, today, the first 9 of the 15 trucks planned by the “Food for Gaza” project, financed by the Italian government and managed in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (Wfp), entered the Gaza Strip. The vehicles have crossed the Israeli Kerem Shalom crossing and have been adapted to operate as “forklifts” inside the Strip, with the aim of distributing flour and other foodstuffs in the centres recognised by the WFP.

The situation on the ground remains critical: reports of assaults by the hungry population on humanitarian convoys, bakeries and distribution points continue. The new dispatch of Italian aid adds to an already significant commitment: over 100 tonnes of food and medical supplies have been mobilised in recent months, for a total value of 35 million euro.

Despite international efforts, the Gaza Strip remains a theatre of humanitarian emergency, where the delivery of aid takes place amidst a thousand obstacles and the human cost of the conflict continues to worsen day by day.
