Elon Musk blames the previous administration of Joe Biden. Stranded on the International Space Station for over eight months, Wilmore and Williams await return with the SpaceX Crew-10 mission
Butch Wilmore, one of the American astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS), commented on Elon Musk’s recent statements that SpaceX could have brought him and colleague Suni Williams back to Earth months ago, but the proposal was blocked by the Biden administration. The two astronauts, who left for an eight-day mission, were held in space for more than eight months due to problems with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that had carried them.
Elon Musk and Donald Trump accuse Biden administration of slowing astronauts’ return
President Donald Trump and Musk have launched accusations against the previous Democratic administration, claiming that the delays in the astronauts’ return were caused by “political reasons”. Wilmore, while not having precise details of Musk’s offers, expressed confidence in his statements, saying that his company could resolve the situation. However, Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen called these accusations ‘lies’ and criticised the politicisation of the affair.
The planned re-entry with the Crew-10 mission: the future of Wilmore and Williams
Despite initial problems with the Boeing Starliner, NASA decided to use SpaceX to bring the astronauts back to Earth. Wilmore and Williams are expected to return with the Crew-10 mission, scheduled for mid-March 2025. The Crew-9 mission, sent in September, was intended to bring the two astronauts back, but to do so requires the new replacement crew to arrive on Crew-10.
