Zelenskyj open to leaving presidency in exchange for peace or NATO membership
Ukrainian President Zelenskyj throws the ball back into the other camp and says he is ready to leave office if it will bring peace or Ukraine’s NATO membership
Volodymyr Zelenskyj said he might quit the presidency in exchange for peace in Ukraine or the country’s entry into NATO. The statement came during a press conference in Kiev today, 23 February, on the eve of the third anniversary of the start of the war. Asked whether he would be willing to leave office, as also requested by Donald Trump, Zelensky explicitly replied: ‘Yes, I would be happy, if I were for peace in Ukraine’. He added: ‘If it is necessary for me to leave my post, I am ready to do so, and I can also do so in exchange for Ukraine’s membership in NATO’.
The Ukrainian president also urged Trump to understand Ukraine’s difficult position and provide the necessary security support. During the conference, Zelenskyj said: ‘I want Trump to understand our position very well, security guarantees from Trump are very necessary’.
