Elon Musk’s severance proposal to cut millions of civil servants put on hold
A federal judge has temporarily halted President Donald Trump’s plan to incentivise the resignation of two million public employees with economic benefits. The decision came just hours before the deadline, delaying until at least Monday the possibility of joining the measure, CNN reported.
The suspension came after an appeal by some unions, who denounced the measure as an ‘arbitrary and illegal ultimatum’. The White House had offered up to eight months’ pay to employees who chose to voluntarily leave their posts by 6 February. Presidential spokeswoman Karoline Levitt stated that the goal is to ‘replace those who don’t want to work with more qualified people’.
So far, about 50,000 civil servants, or 2.5 per cent of the total, had accepted the offer, but the administration was aiming for a reduction of between 5 and 10 per cent. The plan was devised by Elon Musk to support Trump’s plan to reduce what he considers the ‘deep state’ within the federal government.
