The German Chancellor expresses doubts about the CDU position in a heated TV duel with Friedrich Merz

During a televised duel with CDU leader Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed concern about a possible alliance between his opponent CDU-CSU Union and the ultra-right, ahead of the upcoming federal elections on 23 February 2025. Scholz said: ‘This is my concern, seriously’, expressing strong disappointment at recent developments that could lead to political cooperation with the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), a far-right party.

Scholz’s words reflect a growing concern about what he calls the ‘violation of a taboo’ by the CDU, which he says is going beyond its political limits. ‘There is no telling what might happen in the future if things get difficult,’ the chancellor added.

Friedrich Merz, who leads the CDU and is leading in the polls, sought to reassure the public, saying there will be no cooperation between his Union and the AfD. ‘We won’t. We are worlds apart. As far as Europe is concerned, NATO, the euro, Russia, America. There is no common ground between the CDU and the AfD,’ Merz reiterated. However, Scholz responded with scepticism, saying that he could no longer believe these claims, considering that the CDU’s position seems to have softened in recent weeks.

The heated confrontation between the two political leaders highlights the growing tension in Germany regarding possible post-election alliances and concerns about the influence of the far right on national politics.
