At the Munich security conference, the Dutch premier makes clear the urgency of speeding up defence production, calling for an end to bureaucracy in the Atlantic Alliance

During the security conference in Munich, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte clarified statements made yesterday at the conclusion of the first Defence Ministerial 2025. The NATO Secretary General had stressed the need for the Alliance to ‘switch to a war mentality’, urging the defence industry to intensify production.

Today Rutte explained the meaning of his words, stating that ‘Russia now produces in three months the ammunition that the whole of NATO, which is 20 times bigger than Russia in economic size, produces in one year. So we are not keeping up with Russia’.

He continued, stating that ‘Russia is in a war economy. We are not. We have to. We have to cut bureaucracy,’ thus reiterating the urgency for NATO to increase military production and speed up procedures to adequately respond to the increasingly pressing global challenges.
