Zelensky and Biden in Rome: crucial talks and Ukrainian attack on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and outgoing President Joe Biden will meet tomorrow in Rome. Meanwhile, Kiev strikes strategic targets on Russian territory

Volodymyr Zelensky is expected in Rome tomorrow for talks with outgoing US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. For Biden, who is visiting Italy in the coming days, it will be the last European stop before the handover to Donald Trump, who is scheduled to take office in the White House on 20 January. Zelensky will use the occasion to again call for international support against the Russian invasion, which began on 24 February 2022 and is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Zelensky held talks on Tuesday with the President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller Sutter, who offered Switzerland’s willingness to mediate in the conflict. ‘We have assured Switzerland’s continued support, in particular through humanitarian and reconstruction projects, as well as readiness to contribute to the peace process,’ Keller Sutter informed.

On the military front, Kiev announced on Wednesday that it had hit an oil depot in the Saratov region of Russia, used by the Moscow Air Force. According to Ukrainian sources, this depot supplied the Engels-2 military airport, home to Russian strategic aircraft. Intense fighting also continues in the Russian region of Kursk, where Ukrainian forces are trying to create a buffer zone to hinder the deployment of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.
