Kim Jong Un oversees test of new hypersonic missile, sends message to future Trump administration

North Korea has announced that it has successfully conducted a test of a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile, a move with the stated aim of strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrence. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who was present at the launch along with his teenage daughter Ju Ae, said the weapon would effectively deter ‘all rivals in the Pacific region’, a clear warning to neighbouring countries and the US.

The test took place yesterday, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting South Korea, and two weeks before Donald Trump took office as US president. According to the official North Korean agency KCNA, the missile is equipped with a new engine with a carbon fibre body and an advanced flight control system, details that represent a further technological development in the North Korean missile programme.

Analysts believe that this launch represents a direct message to the future Trump administration. According to Hong Min of the Korea Institute for National Unification, the test suggests that North Korea intends to have its strategic position recognised before considering a possible dialogue with Washington.
