The US president will meet Pope Francis, Giorgia Meloni and Sergio Mattarella

Among US President Joe Biden’s last engagements will be an official visit to Italy, scheduled from 9 to 12 January. Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, will arrive in Rome after attending the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. The news was confirmed by White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre during a press briefing.

The official meetings: Pope Francis, Meloni and Mattarella

During his stay in the Italian capital, Joe Biden will hold separate meetings with several important institutional figures. One of the highlights will be his meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis, which will take place at the Vatican. Afterwards, the US President will meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to discuss international and bilateral issues.

Biden’s last days at the White House

This trip to Italy represents one of Joe Biden’s last official engagements as US President before the handover to President-elect Donald Trump on 20 January. The visit confirms the strong relationship between the United States and Italy, as well as underlining the importance of the transatlantic dialogue at a crucial time for world geopolitics.
