ABC News pays million to Donald Trump to settle defamation lawsuit

Agreement between ABC News and Trump to settle defamation lawsuit filed after controversial statement on E. Jean Carroll

ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million to Donald Trump to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by the former president. The lawsuit had been filed after anchorman George Stephanopoulos, during the 10 March 2024 programme This Week, incorrectly stated that Trump had been held civilly liable for the rape of writer E. Jean Carroll. In reality, the jury in the Manhattan trial had found that Trump had sexually abused and defamed Carroll, but without explicit reference to rape.

The agreement stipulates that part of the sum will go to a foundation and museum to be set up by Trump or in his name, and includes $1 million to cover legal fees.
