Corruption in Ukraine under scrutiny as NABU indicts several MPs accused of selling votes in parliament and reports obstacles to its investigation

A new case of corruption in Ukraine has emerged after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) indicted several members of parliament accused of selling their votes in the Verkhovna Rada. The agency also ordered searches of parliamentary group offices, which were initially blocked by security forces.

The case follows a recent investigation into the alleged embezzlement of approximately $100 million in the energy sector, which led to the resignation of Andryi Yermak, a close ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with two cabinet ministers.

According to NABU, investigators uncovered “an organized crime group that includes several lawmakers” who allegedly received illegal benefits in exchange for their parliamentary votes. The agency warned that “obstructing investigative actions constitutes a direct violation of the law.”

NABU was established in 2014 under pressure from the European Union and the United States and is granted independent investigative authority. Its director is appointed by the cabinet of ministers. Last summer, the government attempted to curtail the agency’s independence by placing its activities under the authority of the prosecutor general, who reports directly to Zelensky. That move was halted after widespread public protests.
