Elon Musk proposes solar satellites to regulate Earth’s climate

Elon Musk envisions a constellation of solar-powered satellites equipped with artificial intelligence, capable of modulating solar radiation to reduce global warming or create local microclimates

Elon Musk has presented a new idea to combat climate change: the use of a constellation of solar satellites in orbit, powered by energy captured from the sun, capable of modulating the solar radiation that reaches the Earth. These solar satellites, equipped with artificial intelligence, could reduce the effect of global warming or, conversely, channel solar energy to specific areas to create local microclimates as needed.

According to Musk, his vision is based on the use of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle, designed to launch large payloads into orbit, including up to 100 satellites per mission. In a post on X on 9 November, he stated: ‘Starship, the reusable rocket in advanced development, is designed to carry heavy payloads into orbit, including up to 100 satellites per launch.’

Elon Musk estimates that the project could provide up to 100 GW of orbital power per year within 4-5 years, with potential scalability up to 100 TW thanks to a lunar base for local satellite production. This proposal is one of Musk’s long line of futuristic ideas, which in the past were initially considered unfeasible, such as reusable rockets. In 2025, SpaceX continues to dominate the industry, handling 90% of global space shipments with reusable rockets.
