Fear in the Philippines over super typhoon Fung-Wong: winds of 230 km/h and almost one million people forced to leave their homes

Typhoon Fung-Wong is approaching the Philippines with devastating winds and torrential rain. Known locally as Uwan, the cyclone has forced the evacuation of nearly one million people in the eastern, central and northern provinces. Local authorities have warned that the system could hit hard areas already battered by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which just a week ago caused more than 200 deaths.

Mass evacuations and preventive blackouts

The National Disaster Management Agency confirmed that more than 900,000 people have been evacuated along the path of Typhoon Fung-Wong. Electricity has been cut off as a precautionary measure in several areas of the eastern provinces. The authorities have urged the population not to underestimate the force of the storm and to carefully follow the safety instructions broadcast on the radio and social media.

Gusts of up to 230 km/h, millions of people at risk

Typhoon Fung-Wong has recorded maximum winds of 185 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 230. According to forecasts, more than 8.4 million people could be affected in some way by its passage. The Philippines faces an average of 20 tropical cyclones each year, but the power of this weather system is reminiscent of the dark days of Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 6,300 people.

State of emergency declared by Marcos Jr

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr declared a state of emergency last Thursday, a measure that is still in force throughout the country. Rescue teams are operating in coastal areas, while shelters are housing tens of thousands of displaced people. Authorities remain on alert for possible landslides and flooding in the coming hours.
