Hurricane Melissa devastates the Caribbean and heads towards Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa has reached category 5, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds blowing at up to 256 kilometres per hour. The National Hurricane Centre has reported that the tropical storm doubled in strength over the weekend and is expected to make landfall in Jamaica tomorrow morning, becoming the strongest hurricane ever recorded on the island.

Jamaica on high alert for Hurricane Melissa

The authorities have declared a state of emergency and ordered mandatory evacuations in coastal communities, including some areas of the capital Kingston. All airports have been closed, while hospitals and public shelters have been activated to accommodate people from the most vulnerable areas.

Risk of catastrophic flooding and landslides

The National Hurricane Centre has warned that “catastrophic and potentially life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides are likely today and tomorrow”. Destructive winds, especially in mountainous areas, could cause severe damage to infrastructure and prolonged power and communications outages.

Waves up to four metres high and torrential rain

According to the Jamaica Meteorological Service, Hurricane Melissa will mainly affect the southern side of the island, generating waves up to four metres high and rainfall that could reach 76 centimetres. Public hospitals are in emergency mode, with additional beds and outpatient services suspended to cope with the arrival of the injured.
