UN: ‘Israel committed genocide in Gaza’
The Commission of Inquiry accuses Netanyahu and the state leadership, Israel rejects
The UN report – Independent United Nations investigators accuse Israel of committing ‘genocide’ in Gaza with the intent to ‘destroy the Palestinians’. In the document, published almost two years after the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, the Commission of Inquiry states that Israeli forces committed four of the five acts defined in the 1948 Convention: killings, serious physical and psychological harm, and living conditions aimed at destroying the population.
Responsibility and reactions
“The responsibility for these heinous crimes lies with the Israeli authorities at the highest levels,” said Commission Chair Navi Pillay, a former judge at the Rwanda tribunal, warning that international silence “amounts to complicity”. According to UN figures, nearly 65,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict and much of Gaza’s population has been displaced, while the Strip faces widespread famine.
Arrest warrants and diplomatic clash
The Commission is working with the International Criminal Court, which has already issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel calls the report ‘distorted and false’ and calls for the ‘immediate abolition’ of the Commission of Inquiry, as reported in a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
