At the Tianjin Summit, the Kremlin relaunches its alliance with China and India. Xi presents the Global Governance Initiative, Trump attacks on tariffs and oil

The summit in China – From the port city of Tianjin, China, Vladimir Putin ignored the ultimatums of the United States and Europe on the face-to-face meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and chose to relaunch an alternative axis led by Russia, China and India. Alongside Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Russian president flaunted unity and support for the new Global Governance Initiative (GGI) proposed by Beijing, a plan that aims to overcome the American-led international order that emerged after the Second World War.

Xi proposes new global governance

During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, Xi outlined the key principles of his initiative: sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centred approach and concrete actions. The stated goal is to reduce the gap between the global North and South and build a community with a shared future. ‘The Cold War mentality, hegemony and protectionism continue to haunt the world,’ Xi warned, pointing the finger at American trade policy.

Trump’s anger and the India issue

Notably absent but at the centre of discussions was US President Donald Trump, who accused India from Washington of ‘doing too much business with Russia’. The tycoon threatened 50% tariffs on oil purchased from Moscow, while New Delhi is now aiming to reduce duties. After his mid-August visit to Alaska, where he was welcomed by Trump himself, Putin appeared among the leaders of the SCO, an organisation that brings together China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and other Eurasian countries, presented as an alternative to Western alliances.
