Putin attacks the US and Israel: ‘Unjustified aggression against Iran’, while he bombs Ukraine

The Russian president condemns the raids against Tehran, but it is he who has unleashed a war and continues to strike Kiev. The hypocrisy of Moscow offering ‘support’ to Iran and reiterating its anti-American stance

“An absolutely unprovoked aggression”. This is how Vladimir Putin described the recent attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, speaking at the Kremlin during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. But while the Russian president takes a stand against the raids on Tehran, Russian forces continue to bomb Ukraine ferociously, hitting cities, civilians and infrastructure. Putin’s condemnation comes from a contradictory pulpit and inevitably raises accusations of hypocrisy.

Russia and Iran, strengthened cooperation

Putin said that Russia “is making efforts to help the Iranian people” and reiterated that the actions of the US and Israel are “baseless and unjustified”. He also praised the role of his Foreign Ministry in managing the crisis, stressing the need to bring the situation “back to the diplomatic level” and to “immediately end hostilities”.

Minister Araghchi thanked Moscow, stressing that Iran has the right to defend itself and that Russia ‘is on the right side of history’. The diplomat spoke of the importance of strategic coordination with Moscow in a rapidly changing global context, describing consultations with Russia as ‘of great importance at this delicate stage’.

Moscow considers new aid, including military

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian assistance to Iran will depend on Tehran’s specific requests. The offer of mediation is already considered a form of support, but the supply of weapons, such as S-300 or S-400 air defence systems, is not ruled out if Iran requests them.

Peskov explicitly condemned the US bombings, speaking of “an escalation involving new actors” and expressing “deep regret” for the possible impact on Iranian nuclear facilities, which are still being assessed by the IAEA. “It remains to be seen whether there is a real risk of radiation,” he said.

Dialogue with the US not interrupted

Finally, the Kremlin spokesman revealed that US President Donald Trump did not share the details of the attack in Iran with Putin. ‘The topic has been discussed in the past, but without any operational information. Russia has made some proposals, but nothing specific has been agreed upon.’

Peskov nevertheless clarified that the episode will have no direct consequences on bilateral dialogue with Washington: ‘These are separate dynamics. The diplomatic channel between Russia and the United States remains open.’
