Trump in Arlington for Memorial Day: ‘God brought me back to the White House’

On the day dedicated to the fallen, the president fails to quell his megalomania and combines a tribute to the military with a political message about his return to leading the country

In his speech at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, President Donald Trump paid tribute to the fallen military, emphasising the value of their sacrifice ‘in the name of freedom’, but did not shy away from inserting a personal and political note.

‘God brought me back to the White House,’ he said, referring to the fact that he will be leading the United States during such high-profile global events as the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. ‘A republic that I’m fixing after four long and difficult years,’ he added, noting his return to power after the 2020 election defeat.

From the podium, alongside recently confirmed Senate Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, Trump praised the bravery of the fallen: ‘They picked up the mantle of duty knowing that living for others could mean dying for others’.

It was a speech that alternated the solemn tone of commemoration with the direct, identity-driven language that continues to characterise his presidency.
