Israel threatens and then attacks in Lebanon after rocket fire on Kiryat Shmona
Benjamin Netanyahu announces Israel will strike anywhere in Lebanon in response to threats as the Israeli Air Force conducted raids on Beirut after rockets were fired at Kiryat Shmona
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel ‘will strike anywhere in Lebanon against any threat’ in response to rocket attacks launched from Lebanon on Kiryat Shmona. This marks the first air raid on southern Beirut since November, when a ceasefire was agreed with Hezbollah militants. Netanyahu stated that the equation has changed and that Israel will not tolerate attacks against its own communities.
The Israeli Air Force conducted air strikes in southern Lebanon, also hitting the southern outskirts of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. Two Syrian children were injured in the district of Nabatiye, the Lebanese government agency NNA reported. Israel also warned residents of the Beirut suburbs of imminent evacuation in view of new raids against a Hezbollah base.
Despite these developments, Hezbollah denied any involvement in the rocket attacks, emphasising its respect for the ceasefire in force. However, Israel intensified its air operations, striking a building in the Hadath district of Beirut, signalling the escalation of tensions in the region.
