Strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits Myanmar: tremors felt as far away as Thailand and China
A violent 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck central Myanmar. The tremor was also felt in Thailand and China, causing evacuations and alarm in several areas
An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale shook central Myanmar today, also causing strong tremors in neighbouring Thailand and China. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicentre was located 16 kilometres northwest of the town of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The quake occurred at 2.20pm local time (7.20am in Italy), hitting a densely populated area.
The strong tremors were felt in Thailand, where offices and shops were evacuated as a precaution in Bangkok and the southwestern province of Yunnan, China. At the moment, there are no reports of casualties or significant damage, but the authorities are monitoring the situation to assess the impact of the earthquake in the affected areas.
