Pope Francis: first photo from Gemelli after 31 days of hospitalisation

The first picture of the Pontiff after his hospitalisation for bilateral pneumonia has been released. His condition remains stable and the path to recovery continues

The first official photo of Pope Francis since his admission to Rome’s Gemelli hospital arrived today, Sunday 16 March. The image, released by the Vatican Press Office, shows the Pontiff in profile as he concelebrates Mass in his room. It is the first visual appearance of the Pope after 31 days of hospitalisation, following a diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia.

The Pope’s health condition

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis’ condition is stable. The Pontiff is successfully continuing both drug therapy and respiratory and motor physiotherapy, benefiting in particular from the latter. After the audio message broadcast on 6 March in St. Peter’s Square, today’s image is a positive sign of his recovery.

Activity and recovery time

Although he did not receive any visitors this morning, the Pope continued to work on some projects, the results of which will be visible in the coming days. The Pontiff’s recovery is therefore proceeding cautiously, but with good progress, while the Church confidently awaits further updates on his state of health.
