First US airstrikes against Houthis in Yemen cause dozens of casualties, including women and children. Rebel response is not long in coming
At least 31 civilians, including many women and children, were killed and 101 others wounded in the first U.S. air raids in Yemen as part of the operation ordered by President Donald Trump. The still preliminary toll was released by the Houthi Ministry of Health. “We condemn and denounce these crimes against civilians, which we consider war crimes,” ministry spokesman Anis al Asbahi said via a post on X.
The attack, launched on a large scale, targeted dozens of strategic Houthi targets, including radars, air defenses and missile systems. “I ordered it,” Trump confirmed, explaining that he had asked the U.S. military for decisive military action against the terrorists. The president also sharply criticized former President Joe Biden’s administration, saying his “weak response” had allowed the Houthis to continue their activities.
The attacks were aimed at restoring security in crucial Red Sea shipping lanes blocked by the Houthis. Trump pointed out that for more than a year, no U.S. commercial ship had been able to safely navigate the Suez Canal or the Gulf of Aden, and that the latest U.S. warship, attacked repeatedly by the Houthis, was just one example of the growing threat. The president promised that he would not tolerate further attacks on American ships.
However, the Houthis reacted immediately. The deputy chief of the press office, Nasruddin Amer, stated that the rebels will respond to the United States, saying that Sana’a will remain a bastion of resistance and will not abandon Gaza. The rebels’ political bureau also promised retaliation, reiterating that “escalation will be met with escalation.”
In a statement broadcast on Al-Masirah television, another Houthi official threatened both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that “they are digging graves for the Zionists” and foretelling future revenge.
