After a critical day with episodes of respiratory insufficiency, the Pontiff slept well but remains under close observation at the Gemelli Hospital
Pope Francis spent a restful night, according to the Vatican’s morning update of 4 March. The Holy Father, who has been hospitalised at the Policlinico Gemelli since 14 February for bilateral pneumonia, slept well all night and continues to rest under constant monitoring by doctors.
Despite the night’s rest, yesterday’s day was more complicated for the Pontiff. As explained in the medical bulletin released in the evening, Pope Francis presented two episodes of acute respiratory failure, due to an accumulation of endobronchial mucus that caused bronchospasm. To alleviate the situation, two bronchoscopies were performed with aspiration of copious secretions.
Yesterday afternoon, doctors resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation, while the Pope remained alert, oriented and cooperative. However, the prognosis remains reserved, and the situation is being closely monitored by Gemelli’s doctors.
The course of the pneumonia continues to cause concern, and doctors remain cautious about future developments.
