Beijing introduces new measures from 10 February and initiates action at the WTO against the US

China has announced a series of tariffs in response to protectionist measures imposed by the US. As of 10 February, Beijing will apply a 15 per cent tariff on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal, while agricultural machinery and crude oil will be increased by 10 per cent. The new measures will also affect large vehicles and pickup trucks.

Antitrust investigation against Google and complaint to the WTO

In addition to the duties, China initiated an antitrust investigation against Google, signalling an escalation of economic tension between the two powers. Furthermore, Beijing has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), denouncing the US measures as ‘harmful’ and contrary to international trade rules.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Trump administration’s decisions represent ‘unilateralism and protectionism’ and threaten global economic stability. China reiterated its stance against the trade war, arguing that ‘there are no winners in such an economic conflict’.

Developments in Trump’s trade war

While China responded with its countermeasures, the US president temporarily suspended tariffs against Mexico and Canada after a direct confrontation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, Trump anticipated that new duties could soon be introduced on goods from the European Union as well.
