In inaugural address, 47th president promises sovereignty, security and justice

The new president of the United States, Donald Trump, officially inaugurated his second term in office with a speech in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., promising to ‘put America first’ and usher in a new era of prosperity. ‘From this day forward, our country will prosper and be respected again around the world,’ he said, reiterating that America’s decline is ‘over’.

Trump thanked the former presidents in attendance, including Joe Biden, and drew a critical picture of the country’s situation, accusing the previous government of corruption and inability to handle internal and external crises. ‘For many years a radical and corrupt establishment extracted power and wealth from our citizens, leaving our society in ruins. This will change starting today, fast,’ he said.

Among the central themes of the speech were national security and border control. ‘We have a government that has spent unlimited funds to defend foreign borders, but refuses to protect America’s borders and, more importantly, its people,’ he said, promising to restore sovereignty and justice.

Trump also recalled the assassination attempt he suffered during a rally in Pennsylvania last summer, attributing his survival to divine will: ‘An assassin’s bullet tore my ear, but I believe my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again’.

Concluding his speech, Trump declared that his election represents a mandate to overthrow the ‘betrayal’ that he claimed marked the political establishment. ‘We will restore people’s faith, prosperity, democracy and freedom,’ he promised, announcing an immediate and radical turnaround.
