On Monday, 20 January, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the new president of the United States inside the Capitol Rotunda, breaking with the tradition of holding the ceremony on the outside steps. The decision was made because of the Arctic cold wave that is affecting the country.
‘I don’t want to see people getting sick or injured, these are dangerous weather conditions for the tens of thousands of law enforcement, first aid teams and even horses, as well as my supporters who would be outside for hours,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social. The president recalled how Ronald Reagan, in 1985, also decided to move the ceremony indoors because of a similar frost wave.
The forecast for Washington shows temperatures at historic lows, further lowered by the wind factor. Trump stressed that the choice was dictated by his duty to protect the population, including the hundreds of thousands of supporters expected in the capital.
In addition to the official ceremony at the Capitol, supporters will be able to watch the event live from the Capital One Arena, the same facility that will host a large rally on Sunday night to celebrate the tycoon’s return to the White House. Trump also announced that once the swearing-in is over, he will travel to the arena to personally meet the crowd.
‘It will be a great experience for everyone, especially the television audience,’ Trump said, urging everyone to attend the festivities indoors to ensure the safety and comfort of those in attendance.
