Trump revolutionises inauguration: first invitation to foreign leaders since 1874
For the first time since 1874, Donald Trump is inviting foreign heads of state to his inauguration, but Xi Jinping will not attend
Donald Trump has decided to break a historical tradition by inviting foreign leaders to his inauguration ceremony on 20 January, something that has not occurred since 1874, when usually only ambassadors were present. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping declined the invitation.
According to sources in the future administration, Trump’s move aims to strengthen dialogue with both allied and adversary countries. Among the invited leaders are Viktor Orban, the Hungarian premier, and Giorgia Meloni, the Italian premier, whom Trump publicly praised during a recent meeting in Paris.
Trump’s gesture, which defies diplomatic custom, has been interpreted as an attempt to strengthen international relations, although not all leaders have yet confirmed their participation.
