Trump to NATO: ‘Stop Russian oil or no new sanctions’
The US president calls for unified action by the Alliance and attacks Biden and Zelensky over the war in Ukraine
Donald Trump today, Saturday 13 September, posted a long letter on Truth Social addressed “to all NATO nations and the world”. In the message, the American president links the possible introduction of new sanctions against Moscow to a joint commitment by all Alliance countries. ‘I am prepared to impose tough sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed to and begun to do the same, and when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia,’ he wrote.
Trump criticised the attitude of some allies, describing the continued purchase of Russian crude oil as “disconcerting”, which in his opinion “greatly weakens the negotiating position and bargaining power” vis-à-vis Moscow. “I am ready to go when you are. Just tell me when,” he added.
The president then reiterated that ‘this is not Trump’s war,’ arguing that the conflict ‘would never have started’ if he had been in office. He called the conflict ‘Biden and Zelensky’s war,’ explaining that he wanted to ‘help stop it’ to save ‘thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives,’ which, according to his calculations, would be over 7,000 in the last week alone. ‘If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly and all those lives will be saved. Otherwise, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy and money of the United States,’ he concluded.
