Donald Trump criticises NFL’s “sissy” football rule

US president lashes out at new kickoff regulation designed to protect players

Donald Trump has criticised the latest rule change in the National Football League (NFL), describing it as football “for sissies”. The 2025 season, now two games in, features a new kickoff regulation, which governs how play is resumed after a score.

Under the rule, players on the field cannot charge immediately at the kick; they must wait until the ball is received by the returner. This adjustment, combined with the players’ initial positions, reduces the intensity of collisions and lowers the risk of injury. However, Trump appears strongly opposed to the change.

“The NFL must get rid of that ridiculous new kickoff rule. How can they make such a dramatic, radical change so easily? It’s just as dangerous as a normal kickoff and it’s awful. The ball moves, but the players don’t – the exact opposite of what football is supposed to be,” Trump wrote on Truth. “Sissy football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas? It’s like trying to move the golf ball back so it doesn’t go far,” he added. “Fortunately, college football will remain the same, hopefully forever,” he concluded.
