Court temporarily blocks military from intervening in public order activities: all support for federal agents prohibited

A federal court has issued an order restricting the deployment of soldiers in Los Angeles. The order, signed by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, temporarily prohibits the government from deploying the military for police support or law enforcement operations in the California city.

“The government is temporarily enjoined from deploying troops to enforce or assist federal law enforcement agents, or to take any action beyond the protection of federal buildings,” the text of the order reads.

The measure represents a curb on the use of the armed forces in domestic scenarios outside their constitutional functions, and comes at a time of heightened tension related to law and order in some major U.S. cities. Justice Breyer’s intervention recalls statutory limits on the use of the military in civilian duties, reinforcing the distinction between military and police functions.
