King Charles III in mourning at Trooping the Colour for Air India victims

Black band and minute’s silence at the official parade for the sovereign’s birthday after the plane crash that claimed 241 lives

A sober Trooping the Colour was held today in London to officially celebrate King Charles III’s birthday. The sovereign wore a black sash in memory of the 241 victims of the tragic Air India plane crash two days ago, including more than 50 British citizens.

During the ceremony, which every year brings together thousands of spectators and the entire royal family, a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect for the lives lost. The choice was the King’s personal wish, as confirmed by a Buckingham Palace spokesman: ‘His Majesty has requested significant changes to the programme to honour the families affected and all communities affected by the tragedy.

The black armband was also worn by senior officers attending the parade, as well as Royal Mews staff, including coachmen and women accompanying members of the royal household in the official carriages.

In a composed and emotionally charged atmosphere, the king’s gesture was a strong signal of closeness to all the victims, reinforcing the symbolic bond between the monarchy and the nation in times of collective mourning.
