Three-day operation in Praia da Luz: the aim is to find traces of the body of the girl who disappeared in 2007.

The German federal police will conduct new searches in Portugal this week as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the English girl who disappeared in 2007 in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve region.

The operation, coordinated with the Portuguese authorities, is expected to last three days and will focus exclusively on ground searches. ‘The main objective is to look for any trace of Madeleine’s body,’ a Portuguese source told The Sun newspaper.

The British police, although not directly involved in the operations, said through a spokesperson: ‘We are aware of the searches that will be carried out by the German federal police in Portugal as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The Metropolitan Police are not involved in the search. We will support our international colleagues where necessary.’

German authorities consider German citizen Christian Brückner to be the main suspect in the case. The new investigative activities are focused on an area that has already been reported in the past, in the hope of gathering useful evidence after more than 17 years of mystery.
