Meloni and Frederiksen in Rome: ‘Common fates between Ukraine, migrants and EU security’

Summit at Palazzo Chigi, Italian prime minister and Danish counterpart agree: ‘No step forward on the Russian side on peace in Ukraine, but we are working to start new truce negotiations’

A meeting was held today in Rome between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Among the main topics were the war in Ukraine and the management of migratory flows. Meloni pointed out how Italy and Denmark, despite being in different geographical areas, share the same perception of threat: ‘In Denmark we historically feel the Russian threat, in Italy we instead perceive the domino effect of the conflict on the entire Mediterranean area, on Africa and on the Middle East’.

Ukraine, ‘no opening from Russia’
Meloni reiterated her support for Ukraine, stressing that ‘no concrete steps have been seen from Russia towards peace’. She thanked President Zelensky ‘for his readiness for a ceasefire and high-level negotiations’ and stressed the ongoing work with Western partners, including constant contacts with US President Donald Trump. He went on to mention the Vatican’s role, describing it as ‘valuable’ but conditional on the real willingness of the parties to sit down at the table.

Migrants, Rome-Copenhagen common front
Frederiksen decisively addressed the issue of migrants: ‘We cannot guarantee security if we do not control the external borders. There are limits to the number of people Europe can take in’. The Danish prime minister recalled how at the beginning the restrictive position on migration was a minority one, whereas today it is shared by most EU countries.

Meloni: ‘We need deterrence, the Albania model is an example’
The Italian prime minister confirmed her commitment to finding new tools to fight illegal immigration, reiterating the logic of the protocol with Albania: ‘Many migrants want to arrive in Germany or Denmark, but if we show that they will not really enter Europe, we deter them. Deterrence is the most powerful tool we have’.
