Hegseth: ‘China threatens global stability, ready to use force on Taiwan’
‘China wants to dominate Asia and could soon use force against Taiwan.’ The warning comes from US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, who in his speech in Singapore called on Asian allies to urgently strengthen their defences
At the Shangri-La Dialogue forum, the main platform for dialogue on security in Asia, Hegseth issued a clear warning: ‘The threat posed by Beijing is real. And it could be imminent.’ According to the Pentagon chief, the Chinese regime is preparing ‘in a clear and credible way’ for a possible military operation aimed at conquering Taiwan and altering the strategic balance in the region.
‘Their military is training for the decisive moment,’ Hegseth said, pointing out that China’s increasingly frequent and impressive military exercises around the island are part of a precise plan to develop the capabilities necessary for a future invasion.
‘We are back in the Indo-Pacific. And we are here to stay.”
In his speech, Hegseth also sought to reassure regional partners about the American presence in the Indo-Pacific. “This is our priority area,” he reiterated, stating that the United States is ready to support the stability and security of the Asian continent against any attempt at Chinese hegemony.
The Pentagon chief’s remarks come at a delicate moment, with tensions between China and Taiwan steadily rising and Washington fearing that Beijing may decide to force the issue to impose its sovereignty over the island.
