Elon Musk against Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’: ‘It increases the deficit, it’s neither big nor beautiful’

Tesla founder harshly criticises the bill sponsored by Trump and passed by the House: in the Senate, the outcome is uncertain due to internal divisions among Republicans

Elon Musk takes a stand against the new spending bill passed by the US House, dubbed the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ by President Donald Trump. Interviewed by Cbs, the Tesla founder expressed deep disappointment with a measure that he said undermines the deficit containment goals promoted by the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), a body he created.

‘A law can be great or beautiful, but not both,’ Musk joked, criticising the increase in government spending envisaged by the manoeuvre. ‘I was disappointed to see such a massive bill, which actually increases the deficit instead of reducing it,’ he added, emphasising the gap between the promises of efficiency and the reality of the numbers.

The bill, which passed in the House by a single vote, captures much of Trump’s domestic agenda, with actions on tax, immigration, and social policies. But Musk’s words could weigh on the process in the Senate, where the Republican front is showing signs of fracture.

Senator Ron Johnson has already called for more decisive cuts in government spending, while other colleagues express fears about the social impact of the measure, in particular the cuts to Medicaid and the cancellation of environmental incentives introduced with the Inflation Reduction Act.

The debate promises to be heated and the position of Musk, who is also an influential voice in the fields of innovation and finance, is likely to exacerbate the tensions already present in the Republican majority.
