Race against time to rescue survivors after the earthquake that claimed more than 2,700 lives. Calls for a truce to facilitate humanitarian aid

Five days after the devastating earthquake struck Myanmar, rescuers have pulled a 26-year-old man alive from the rubble of a hotel in Naypyidaw. The young man, an employee of the hotel, was rescued by a joint Turkish-Burmese team shortly after midnight. Dazed and covered in dust, but conscious, he was rescued through a gap in the rubble and carried on a stretcher. The fire brigade released the video of the rescue on social media.

The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, razed buildings across the country, causing more than 2,700 deaths and leaving thousands homeless.

Meanwhile, some armed groups in conflict with the army announced a temporary truce. However, the head of the military junta, Min Aung Hlaing, reiterated his intention to continue ‘defensive operations’ against what he called ‘terrorists’. The United Nations, human rights organisations and foreign governments have urged all sides to suspend fighting and focus on aid for the victims of the earthquake, the strongest recorded in the country for decades.
