The Pontiff suffered respiratory crisis caused by accumulation of mucus. Intensive care continues at Gemelli, the situation remains critical

Pope Francis, hospitalised since 14 February at the Gemelli Hospital for bilateral pneumonia, has experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure in recent hours. The update comes directly from the Vatican, which explained how the crises were caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm. To deal with the situation, the Holy Father underwent two bronchoscopies with aspiration of copious secretions.

Resumption of non-invasive mechanical ventilation

In the afternoon, doctors resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation, a necessary measure to assist the Pope in breathing. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the bulletin states that the Pontiff remained alert, oriented and cooperative throughout the day. The prognosis, however, remains reserved, reflecting the complexity of the clinical picture.

Condition stable but still critical

The morning had passed relatively calmly, with Vatican sources reporting that the Pope had ‘rested well all night’ and eaten breakfast. However, the afternoon respiratory crisis temporarily worsened the situation. According to doctors, the accumulation of mucus that caused the seizures is a natural consequence of pneumonia, and does not indicate a new infection.

Possible future complications and medical precautions

According to virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco, interviewed by Adnkronos, ‘the Pope’s situation continues to be critical,’ as the main issue related to pneumonia and its effects on the lungs has not yet been resolved. Pregliasco stressed that if the condition does not improve, intubation may be necessary, although at the moment this is only a possible future development.

The Gemelli doctors continue to monitor the situation closely, waiting to see the effectiveness of the ongoing antibiotic therapy.

Ash rites postponed, Spiritual Exercises in doubt

In view of Pope Francis’ upcoming commitments, it has already been decided that the rites of Ash, scheduled for next Wednesday at the Aventine, will be presided over by Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, as ordered by the Pontiff himself. There is still no information, however, on the Curia’s Spiritual Exercises, which were to begin next Sunday in the Paul VI Hall.
