Dangerous waves could hit the coast within a 300 km radius of the epicentre, located in the Pacific Fire Belt

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the Pacific Ocean islands of Tonga today, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The seismic event took place at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the German Geosciences Research Centre.

Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for the coast of the Tonga archipelago. The US tsunami warning system warned that ‘dangerous tsunami waves could occur within a 300-kilometre radius of the epicentre’. Authorities are monitoring the situation and urge the population to follow safety instructions.

Tonga, an archipelago of 170 islands, lies within the Pacific ‘Fire Belt’, an area particularly prone to intense seismic and volcanic activity. The French Ministry of the Interior has also recalled the risks of tsunamis in this area following strong earthquakes, emphasising the vulnerability of the archipelago’s islands.
