Pope Francis at the Jubilee of the Armed Forces: ‘Be vigilant against the spirit of war’
Due to bronchitis, the Pontiff had to delegate the reading of the homily to an aide
Pope Francis, despite respiratory problems related to bronchitis, wanted to be present in St Peter’s Square for the Jubilee Mass for the Armed Forces, Police and Security Forces. However, during the celebration he had to interrupt the reading of the homily, entrusting it to a collaborator.
In his message, the Pontiff emphasised the role of military chaplains, reiterating that their task is not ‘to bless perverse acts of war’, but to offer moral and spiritual support to the forces of law and order. He went on to praise the daily commitment of the armed forces and police in protecting security and legality, urging them to always remain at the service of the common good.
Francis made a strong appeal for the military and security forces to be vigilant ‘against the temptation to cultivate a spirit of war’ and not to be seduced ‘by the myth of force and the noise of weapons’. Finally, he called on everyone to be witnesses of peace, justice and fraternity.
