Ecuador: deadly shooting in Guayaquil, seven victims among the crowd

The shadow of criminal gangs continues to sow terror in the country

An armed attack claimed the lives of at least seven people on Sunday evening in Guayaquil, a port city located in the province of Guayas, known to be one of the epicentres of violence in Ecuador. The tragic episode occurred in the Pascuales parish area, where a group of people were targeted by gunmen while standing in the street. Among them was apparently a 17-year-old boy.

The shooting occurred around 11pm local time, leaving the bodies of the victims scattered between the pavement and the street. It was Ecuavisa television that reported the details of the attack, which further shook a city already heavily marked by insecurity and organised crime.

Since the beginning of 2024, President Daniel Noboa has declared a state of ‘internal armed conflict’ to deal with criminal gangs, which are behind the wave of violence in Ecuador. Guayas is one of the provinces where a state of emergency has been imposed, in an attempt to contain a situation that is now out of control, with the army and security forces working to restore security.
