An Argentinian judge has ordered the arrest of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice-President Rosario Murillo for systematic human rights violations. The measure is based on the principle of universal jurisdiction
An Argentinian judge has issued an arrest order against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice-President Rosario Murillo, accusing them of serious and systematic human rights violations. The decision, announced by lawyer Dario Richarte, is based on the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to prosecute crimes against humanity even if committed outside their territory. This principle aims to ensure that serious crimes, such as those attributed to Ortega and Murillo, do not go unpunished.
Ortega has been widely criticised internationally for his repression of protests and consolidation of power in Nicaragua, with allegations of torture, arbitrary arrests and systematic human rights violations by his regime.
