Netanyahu to Speak With Aoun as Israel-Lebanon Contacts Resume

U.S. signals precede confirmation from Israeli minister; Beirut had denied awareness of talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to speak today with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, according to Science and Technology Minister Gila Gamliel, a member of Israel’s security cabinet.

Gamliel disclosed the planned contact in an interview with Army Radio, in remarks later reported by The Times of Israel. The confirmation came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said on social media that Israeli and Lebanese leaders would be in contact today, without naming the participants.

Following Trump’s post, several media outlets cited a Lebanese official who said Beirut had no knowledge of any imminent communication with Israel and had not received messages through official channels.

Earlier this week, Israeli and Lebanese representatives met in Washington with U.S. backing, in what has been described as the highest-level engagement between the two countries.

The renewed contacts come amid reports of a possible ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese group, which could begin in the near term.
