Argentina, investigation on Milei: President’s bank accounts under scrutiny for $Libra scam

The judiciary is investigating the financial movements of the ultraliberal leader and his sister Karina as part of the alleged cryptocurrency fraud

Argentina’s judiciary has turned the spotlight on President Javier Milei’s bank accounts as part of the investigation into alleged fraud linked to the $Libra cryptocurrency. The judge in charge of the investigation has asked the Central Bank to provide full data on financial movements in the name of the head of state, his sister Karina Milei, and three other suspects, in the period between 2023 and today.

The aim is to reconstruct any suspicious transactions that could be traced back to the promotion and support of the digital currency, which ended up at the centre of an alleged fraudulent scheme. In the order, it is alleged that Milei and his associates had, directly or indirectly, favoured the spread of $Libra, to the detriment of investors deceived by false promises of profits.

The request for access to the accounts marks a new judicial escalation for the ultraliberal Argentinean leader, already at the centre of controversy for his support of cryptocurrencies as an alternative instrument to traditional currencies.
