The New York Times investigates Melania Trump’s absence from Washington: barely two weeks in official residence since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. She prefers Manhattan or Mar-a-Lago

Less than 14 days in the White House: that’s how long Melania Trump has reportedly spent in Washington since her husband Donald returned to the US presidency on 20 January. This is reported by the New York Times, which cites sources close to the First Lady and openly asks ‘where is Melania?’, explaining how the president’s consort prefers to live in Trump Tower in Manhattan or at her residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Administration sources claim that Melania’s presence in Washington is more frequent than is generally believed, but the wing reserved for her often remains dark and there is no confirmation of how much time she actually spends there. According to some observers, no First Lady has kept such a low profile since Bess Truman in the 1940s.

Away from the public scene, however, Melania continues to pursue her own projects: she has launched a cryptocurrency token ($Melania) and signed a roughly $40 million deal with Amazon to make a documentary about her life as First Lady. But while she remains aloof, it is President Trump who is in charge of typical presidential consort activities: from choosing the lighting to redesigning the rose garden and organising events for Women’s Month.

The First Lady’s last official appearance at the White House was on 21 April, on the occasion of the traditional Easter celebration. A few days earlier she had appeared at the State Department for a ceremony, but even then she had avoided the east wing of the residence. When the first group of tourists was welcomed at the White House, it was Trump himself who did the honours.

The US newspaper also points out that the episode of the failed assassination attempt on the president in July and the recent court cases have contributed to further cooling Melania’s already rare public exposure. According to sources close to the couple, the distance between the two was also evident on the occasion of the First Lady’s birthday on 26 April, when on their return from Rome, each headed to different places.

Melania will not accompany Trump on his upcoming tour of the Middle East, nor is she scheduled to attend the funeral of Pope Francis. And while the president intends to turn the rose garden into a patio and build a ballroom at the White House, she – initially annoyed – has reportedly come to accept her husband’s new choices with detachment.
