Beijing responds harshly to JD Vance’s statements on ‘Chinese peasants’ and economic relations

The words of US Vice-President JD Vance have aroused the ire of Beijing, which strongly condemned a recent statement made during an interview with Fox News. Vance, in defending the duties imposed by the US, said that Washington ‘borrowed money from Chinese farmers’, a statement that angered the authorities in Beijing.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded firmly: ‘It is surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and rude words from this vice-president,’ he said at a press conference, calling Vance’s tone unacceptable.

Beijing: ‘Our position is clear’

Lin Jian recalled that China’s position on economic and trade relations with the US is well-known and constantly reiterated. China, he added, expects US representatives to ‘speak and act responsibly’ to protect the dialogue between the two superpowers.

Tariffs and the attack on ‘globalism

During the Fox News interview, Vance defended the duties as a necessary measure to protect the US economy from what he called a ‘globalist economy that has not worked for ordinary Americans’.

His words not only struck a blow at the international economic model, but also reignited tensions between Washington and Beijing at an already delicate time for bilateral relations.
