UKHSA confirms clade 1b infection of monkeypox. No link to risk areas or other known cases. Investigations launched to trace source of infection
There is mystery in the UK over a confirmed case of Mpox, the former monkeypox, which can be traced back to the clade 1b variant, believed to be among the most virulent. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that the infected person had not travelled to any risk areas nor had any known contact with other cases, making the origin of the infection uncertain.
The patient, resident in the north east of England, was diagnosed in March. Since then, all close contacts have been monitored, but no new positives have emerged, the agency pointed out.
The risk to the general population is considered to be low, but the incident has triggered careful surveillance and tracking to determine the possible source of the infection.
The clade 1b variant is less common in Europe and usually associated with outbreaks in Central Africa. Its occurrence in a patient with no links to these areas raises questions about silent local transmission and possible underground circulation of the virus.
